Portfolio analysis GE or 9-cell

BCG pioneered the 4-cell matrix (cash cows, stars, ?s, dogs) and GE did them one better with their business screen, the 9-cell. They do still follow a portfolio approach, refiguring their portfolios for strategic fit and "dogs".

Today, the Financial Times discusses their divestment of a business, that didn't fit or unbalanced their portfolio:

General Electric is in talks to sell its security systems unit to United Technologies Corp for more than $1.5bn in yet another effort to reshuffle its sprawling portfolio and raise capital for acquisitions.
