The word comes from ancient Greek: synergia means working together. Andrew Campbell and Michael Goold, two British academics, define it as “links between business units that result in additional value creation”. It is, they go on to say, “a Holy Grail for large multi-unit companies”. It is something akin to the philosopher’s stone: seeming to create extra value without consuming resources.

It's hilarious to me that if you asked a general question about M&A to an executive at a leading company, they would almost inevitably try to point out a positive aspect of it, but when you ask them to name a large MorA that has worked, they start to stutter. Another prime example pointed out in the article is Leon Cooperman, a senior executive at Goldman Sachs. Can't anyone think of a MorA that actually worked the way it was intended?
